Steelhead Critical Habitat Fish Barriers

In an effort to designate Endangered Species Act Critical Habitat for Steelhead in California, the National Marine Fisheries Service (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Fisheries) Southwest Regional Office designated Coastal Evolutionary Significant Units throughout the state.  The maps below, created by CCKA, show how dams and road crossings create an abundance of impassible barriers on the waterways designated as critical habitat for Steelhead, denying native fish the cold, abundant flows they need to thrive.  The dams and road crossings depicted in the maps are full, year-round, barriers to fish passage; the barriers mapped are part of the Passage Assessment Database (PAD), an inventory of known and potential barriers to anadromous fish passage in California.  The PAD is a product of CalFish, California's Cooperative Anadromous Fish and Habitat Data Program.
