Sacramento water agencies next week launch the region's largest-ever water conservation campaign to persuade residents to use less water on outdoor landscaping.

The "Blue Thumb Campaign," led by the Sacramento Regional Water Authority, launches Wednesday with a media event that highlights six homeowners in the region earning awards for their conservation efforts. The campaign includes a new web site that goes live next week showing residents how to earn their own "blue thumb" by pledging to conserve: www.bewatersmart.info

"To me it's pretty monumental," said Linda Higgins, water efficiency program manager at the authority. "We've really got all the water agencies in the region to work together."

That includes 19 water providers from West Sacramento to Auburn and Placerville, serving about 2 million residents.

The campaign will include television and radio advertising. On Saturdays during May, the authority also partners with 16 area Home Depot stores to promote the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Water Sense" program, which certifies frugal household fixtures.
