SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Coast Guard officials said they were trying to find the source of a reported 15-mile-long oil slick stretching from Southern California to Mexico.
A recreational boater called the Coast Guard Saturday morning after spotting the rainbow-colored oily sheen on the surface of the ocean about 6 miles off Imperial Beach, Calif., The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Coast Guard spokeswoman Allyson Conroy said after a Jayhawk helicopter was pulled from a training mission to investigate, its crew saw a half-mile-wide oily trail stretching west 15 miles then south into Mexican waters.
