N. Calif cities to pay for sewage plant violations

The Sonoma County city of Healdsburg will pay a $369,000 fine for numerous violations at its old sewer plant.

The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board recorded more than 120 violations at the plant between 2004 and 2008. They included small sewage spills and excessive levels of chlorine in a former gravel pit used for handling treated wastewater.

The plant has since been replaced by a new $32 million facility.

To the south, the San Mateo County city of San Carlos agreed Monday to pay a $350,000 settlement for overflows of untreated sewage into San Francisco Bay.
