Starting tomorrow, some of the year’s highest tides will occur along California shorelines, providing a glimpse of what the state can expect as sea levels rise in the coming years. These “king tides” – as the highest winter tides are called – will be captured by citizens in the second annual California King Tides Initiative. Organizers expect king tides from December 23-24, with particularly high tides occurring on the morning of December 23rd. These December king tides mark the first of three winter king tides events, and will be followed by king tides on January 20, 21, 22, 2012 and February 6, 7, 8, 2012.
The Initiative aims to help communities visualize the impacts of sea level rise and identify areas currently vulnerable to flooding from extremely high tides. The goal of the Initiative is to inspire communities to take action to protect homes, harbors, and other key infrastructure, as well as beaches, wetlands, and public access to the coast. Initiative Organizers are calling on citizens to submit photos taken in areas already known to flood, and areas where high water levels can be gauged against sea walls, bridge supports or dikes. Participants can submit photos, and view photos from the 2010-2011 King Tides at www.flickr.com/groups/cakingtides.
