Motorists get smelly surprise as heat roasts raw sewage on road

It was a hot, stinky ride for motorists around lunchtime Wednesday as more than 30 gallons of raw sewage spilled onto Interstate 5, south of Calgrove Boulevard, in near-triple-digit heat.

About 12:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate, a United Waste truck reported to be hauling “some type of fluid” spilled its load, said California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz.

When emergency crews of the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, they found the fluid to be raw sewage, he said.

Between 30 and 35 gallons of sewage spilled onto the freeway as temperatures soared to a high of 97 degrees in the Newhall Pass.
