EBMUD dumps plan to expand Pardee Reservoir

A contentious proposal by an East Bay water utility to enlarge the Pardee Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada foothills will be dropped from the agency's long-term water storage plan, officials announced Monday.

East Bay Municipal Utility District officials said Monday that they believe they can meet water supply demands over the next 30 years without enlarging the reservoir.

The expansion of Pardee, which would have flooded about 2 miles of the Mokelumne River, was originally part of the district's long-range effort to increase its water supply in times of drought. A Sacramento judge threw out the district's 2009 environmental report this year on the grounds that it failed to adequately weigh the project's harm to important resources.
