Dems cool to suspension of global warming regulations

To absolutely no one's surprise, the Assembly's liberal-leaning Natural Resources Committee killed a measure Monday that would have suspended the state's groundbreaking global warming act.

But Assembly Bill 118, by Assemblyman Dan Logue, R-Linda (Yuba County), won't go gentle into the night: Logue and others, apparently anticipating the cool reception, were already working on an identical ballot measure. They plan to begin collecting signatures at the end of the month, and hope to get the measure on the November ballot.

A little background: in 2006, Assembly Bill 32 was passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor. The sweeping bill mandates that the state reduce carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, a 25 percent reduction, and leaves most of the details -- i.e., development of regulations -- up to the California Air Resources Board. Many of the crucial details will be released by that board this year.
