COSTA MESA, CA – Orange County Coastkeeper and Groupon Grassroots (http://grassroots.groupon.com), the philanthropic arm of Groupon, announce the launch of a local campaign to complete the Natural Play Garden feature of the Coastkeeper Garden. The concept of the Natural Play Garden comes from the growing popularity of natural playgrounds, or nature play. The campaign will be available on the Orange County Groupon Grassroots page beginning on Monday, September 10, and running through Sunday, September 16. Utilizing Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the Natural Play Garden initiative in increments of $10 with each donation providing the means to build important educational components of the play area.

Natural play engages children with nature, teaches them to feel comfortable and curious about their environment, and provides an authentic connection to the natural world. Children experiencing and learning from a natural setting inspires future conservationists and instills a genuine sense of stewardship. Natural playgrounds are inspiring and innovative ways to return children to the simplicity of nature and active, outdoor play. Elements such as sand, stones, dirt, wood, and water provide natural obstacles and inspire creative building of structures.

“We are excited to employ the collective action model of Groupon Grassroots to raise support for the Natural Play Garden,” said Garry Brown, Executive Director of Coastkeeper. “We look forward to creating new awareness for Coastkeeper as one of the local organizations in Orange County to be featured on Groupon Grassroots.”

100% percent of the Groupon Grassroots campaign proceeds will be used to provide critical features of the Natural Play Garden. The first $500, or the tipping point, which is necessary to reach or Coastkeeper cannot earn any of the funds, will go to building an adobe. This structure will allow for children to use their imaginations when playing in and around it, as well as teach them about some California natural history. The remainder of funds raised will go to installing benches and other features for parents to rest on as their children explore the garden.

The Coastkeeper Garden is a two and one-half acre demonstration garden located behind Santiago Canyon College in the City of Orange. This unique, sustainable garden will teach the public about California Friendly landscaping techniques, which conserves water and eliminates polluted urban runoff. The garden incorporates six California Friendly vignettes that represent popular, regional architectural styles that show how California Friendly landscaping is practical and beautiful.

Founded in 1999, Orange County Coastkeeper identifies pollution issues affecting water quality in local creeks, rivers, bays and coastal regions. The organization’s mission is to protect and preserve the region’s marine habitats and watersheds through education, advocacy, restoration, research and enforcement. Orange County Coastkeeper is a proactive, collaborative, and dynamic 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. For more information, visit www.coastkeeper.org or call 714-850-1965.
